Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world both to play and watch. The game requires incredible physical strength and mental intelligence. Tennis is a sport that can be played for most of a person’s lifetime, making it worth enjoying for decades.

Playing tennis with friends is a great way to engage in the game. But if you truly want to get better, you will need to do more than that.

Private lessons are the single most effective way to fine-tune your tennis skills. Training with a coach will challenge you and make your tennis training more exciting. You will receive tailored feedback, helping you take your game to the next level.

The Paseo Club is a social club in the Santa Clarita Valley that has supported members in health and fitness for over twenty years. We offer tennis, pickleball, fitness, and swimming facilities, plus a range of social activities for our members.

In this article, you will learn what private tennis lessons are, the benefits of private tennis lessons, the cost, and much more!

It may sound like an obvious question, but what a private tennis lesson is actually a little different than you may think.

Private lessons are often one coach teaching one student. But it can be one coach instructing two students or even four if it is a lesson on doubles tennis. Some people prefer these private “group” lessons as a more affordable option than one-on-one.

What are the 6 benefits of attending private tennis lessons?

As a tennis player, you may believe you are getting all the practice you need by meeting with other players a couple of times a week to play or attending a group lesson (drill). But the reality is that there are several benefits to private training.

1. Target Specific Skills

You can use your private lessons to focus on specific skills. The Paseo Club’s coaches help identify areas that need attention so that you can be a more effective and well-rounded player.

If you are a serious player, your coach can help you develop your own style, playing to your strengths. This will help you be a more formidable player on the court.

3. Learn at Your Own Pace

Whether you need to go slower or you want to train harder and faster, private lessons allow you to have a customized pace independent of other people.

4. Prepare for Tournaments

Tournament prep is a key aspect. You can dissect your last match and work on what needs improving.

5. Practice Safe Technique

Learning tennis isn’t just about the game. You need to learn how to take care of your body so you can play for the long haul. That means practicing proper warm-up, cold-down, and mobility work, keeping you injury-free.

Private lessons mean your coach is all yours for the duration of the scheduled period. They are not distracted from helping other players. They are watching only you, allowing for detailed, in-depth analysis of your game.

How long do private tennis lessons last?

Private tennis lessons last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your age, level, and goals. This is something you can discuss with your professional coach.

How often should you schedule private tennis lessons?

Tennis is a sport of repetition. Ideally, you should be able to handle even the most stressful situations on the court and trust your body to perform properly. That is not possible without training and repetition.

You cannot practice too much, but a minimum is twice a week to see improvement.

Prices vary depending on the coach. Rates are between $70 - $95 per hour.

Can players benefit from taking private lessons and attending drills?

Yes!

Tennis drills are classes taught to small groups of students. Drills focus on several topics, so you can choose the drill most geared towards your interests. This is a great way to improve your abilities and meet other players of a similar level.

To maximize skill development, schedule one or two private lessons and join one or two drill classes per week.

Are private tennis lessons just for high-level players?

No!

Private tennis lessons are for all levels and ages. Private tennis lessons are particularly beneficial when you are first learning the fundamentals.

When you sign up for a private tennis lesson, you are investing in yourself and your passion for the game. Make sure to make the most out of your lessons by doing the following things:

  • Be prepared by coming a few minutes early to stretch, get a sip of water, and make any final adjustments to your gear or attire.
  • Pay attention to your coach’s feedback. You can even take notes! This feedback can be worth its weight in gold and is an integral part of strengthening your skills.
  • Practice newly acquired skills between lessons to develop more familiarity with the techniques you learned from you instructor. It will help you learn faster and allow you to build on your skills from one lesson to the next.

The Paseo Club has a comprehensive tennis program led by Tennis Director René Heger. The club offers private and group lessons of all levels, leagues, and tournaments. There are fourteen pros on staff to choose from, so you are sure to find a great fit for you for your private tennis lessons.

All great tennis players do not confine their training to the courts. Cross-train with mobility, cardio, or strength training classes. The Paseo Club offers over 60 fitness classes per week to choose from, including Footwork and Mobility Work for Tennis and Pickleball Players.
