High-intensity, high-impact training has received a lot of attention over the last two decades — and for good reason! It is a great system for burning fat, building muscle, and improving endurance. Yet, all of those sprints, box jumps, and burpees can really tax your joints.
If you are middle-aged or older, have injuries, or joint issues, such as arthritis, high-impact exercises are simply not an option. Yet, that does not mean that you cannot get a great workout! There are many ways that you can break a sweat and get fit while protecting your joints.
The Paseo Club has served the Santa Clarita Valley for over 20 years, offering dozens of types of fitness programs and social activities to members of all ages. In this article, we will share with you what low impact means, why low-impact workouts are worth it, and what low-impact classes you can find at The Paseo Club.
What does low-impact mean?
Low-impact exercises are movements that do not stress or strain the joints, including the knees, hips, and ankles. It usually means you have one or both feet on the ground or apparatus during your workout.
Why are low-impact workouts worth it?
Just because you need to do low-impact exercises does not mean you can’t get a great workout. You can still elevate your heart rate and build strength while minimizing aggravating your body or risking injury.
For example, swimming for an hour can burn as many calories as jogging for the same amount of time. Most resistance training activities, whether using barbells, dumbbells, or kettlebells, are low-impact. Pilates and yoga are low-impact workouts that can also help you mobilize your joints and increase flexibility.
Because low-impact workouts are so protective of the joints, it is the most sustainable choice for your long-term fitness lifestyle, limiting the chances of injury or extended recovery time.

Reformer Pilates is Pilates performed on a cabled carriage-type machine called a reformer. This machine helps participants build strength, coordination, and balance.
