The research is dismal.
- 50% of people do not like to exercise
- 54% of people are bored when exercising
- 50% of people feel intimidated at the gym

What is Zumba?
Zumba is a Latin-inspired form of aerobic fitness developed by the Colombian choreographer, Alberto (Beto) Perez.
The famous story is that the 16-year-old Alberto was teaching aerobics in his hometown of Cali when he realized he had forgotten the music for his class at home. He went to his car and grabbed what he had — a mix tape of Latin music.
He taught class, improvising the choreography as he went, and it was a hit. He decided to change his approach to teaching and continued this dance-inspired fitness method. His classes grew and grew and became famous in the region, and then throughout the rest of Latin America. In 1999, Beto came to the US and launched Zumba.
Zumba has become so internationally successful that over 15 million people attend Zumba exercise classes every week in 186 countries.
The 9 Top Benefits of Zumba
1. It is Fun!
Zumba class is exciting and energetic. The music is pumping, and the choreography is inspiring, making this an exercise class you definitely want to attend!
2. Reduce Pain
In the same study as noted above, pain levels were assessed before and after the 12-week Zumba program. Researchers used the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) to assess the severity of pain and its impact on functioning. The pain severity and pain interference score reduced from 1.6 to 0.5.
3. Boosts your Mood
Exercise always helps improve people’s moods. It is scientifically proven that when we work out, our bodies release endorphins and our stress levels drop. Zumba excels at lifting the mood because not only are you exercising, but you are listening to great music and dancing with fellow club members.
4. Full Body Workout
Unlike some forms of exercise, such as cycle class, Zumba hits all major areas of your body — legs, glutes, core, and upper body. This helps you lose weight and get a toned physique.
5. Increase Metabolism
In a study of overweight Italian women, "significant" changes in BMI (body mass index) and body weight occurred in just 12 weeks of Zumba. On average, they lost three kilos (6.6 pounds). They also increased their muscle mass, contributing to a leaner and more toned physique.
6. Improves Heart Health
Zumba is a form of cardiovascular exercise that gets your heart beating and sweat pouring! Cardio fitness helps reduce your chance of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic serious diseases.
7. Increased Accountability
Zumba is a group fitness class. When you attend class, you become a part of a community. You get to meet new people and become friends. They, along with your coach, will become your accountability partners. They will help keep up your attendance and encourage you to return every week. This helps improve the frequency and consistency of your exercise routine.
8. Reduces Menstrual Cramps
In a study published in PubMed, it was noted that young women who attended Zumba classes had decreased menstrual cramps. The researchers created two control groups. The group who attended Zumba twice a week for eight weeks had significantly decreased menstrual pain and reduced duration of pain.
9. Improve Coordination and Balance
Do you ever feel clumsy or uncoordinated? Zumba will help you become more athletic and dexterous. Plus, next time you are on the dance floor at the local club or your friend's wedding, you will have some confident dance moves!
How many calories are actually burned doing Zumba?
Zumba has grown to be one of the most popular group fitness classes in the world, in particular because it is so upbeat and fun. “Ditch the Workout – Join the Party!” is Zumba’s slogan.
However, is it an effective form of exercise? It turns out, Zumba is highly efficient at burning calories — averaging 553 calories per 60-minute class.
Caloric burn does vary according to the individual. Factors to consider include:
- Age
- Gender
- Genetics
- Current weight
- Level of physical fitness
- Intensity during workout
Is Zumba good for Beginners?
When you are new to fitness, it is essential that you find workouts that you love. If you are bored, intimidated, or confused, you simply won’t stick with it. No one does.
Zumba classes are welcoming places and are great for beginners. The classes are enjoyable and lively, making it a festive and cheerful environment.
However, if you are new to Zumba, be prepared to give yourself time to learn the movements. The choreography takes practice, and it’s likely you’ll feel a little bit clumsy at first. Zumba class is a judgment-free space, so check your ego at the door and do your best. You will get more capable and confident with each class.
